Advance Reading Challenge Guidelines
Reading should be done by the students unless they are using one of their three audio book selections, but they can receive help with difficult words and concepts, and can also read the selections aloud and discuss them with other people. ARC is meant to help students ENJOY high quality and advanced selections and many students enjoy reading most when they have other people engaged in reading with them. Many classrooms will also allow students to READ during class time as part of their independent reading time.
Projects should be designed and completed by the students as a reflection the students' understanding. It can be difficult to allow them to take charge or struggle to figure something out, but it shows them difficult things can be accomplished with time.
Selections must be new reads and students may read from higher lists, but not lower ones. Each project can be done twice and the project matrix simply provides ideas; students are encouraged to create new ways to show understanding. Students may listen to three audio books and may choose three books not on the ARC lists to read with coordinator approval (Mrs. Dosumu or Ms.Thomas)
